Tips to taking your herbal medicines (and enjoying it)

Yeah, we get it. Sometimes taking your herbal medicines takes a little getting used to, so that’s why we’ve set up this handy little guide.

If you are struggling, we want you to know that you’re not alone, however the vast majority of our clients report enjoying taking the herbs after an initial getting use to period. In fact we’ve had clients express feeling sorry to not be taking herbal medicines anymore when we’ve accomplished our goal!

Tip 1: The first port of call is if you’re feeling a little unease in the stomach after taking herbs, make sure you take them after food.

Tip 2: Make sure you hold your nose and have a chaser handy. This could be a cracker or a small amount of honey on a teaspoon, or a little juice. Only once you’ve got the chaser in release the nose.

Tip 3: Try drinking through a straw.

Tip 4: Adding a little honey to the herbs. Don’t rely on this one too much as in some cases honey can be counter productive (looking at you Damp patterns!).

Tip 5: Play around with the temperature. We always want the herbs to be at least body temperature to protect the Stomach energy (ie. what you eat/drink doesn’t feel cold going down the gullet). Some people find it tastes less offensive either cooler or warmer. I find the hotter it is brings out those bitter notes more, but I’ve had people report the opposite.

Tip 6: Drop dose down to smaller portions to shot it down.

Tip 7: It might sound woo woo, try catching the thoughts and flipping the dialogue in your head “these herbs are helping me heal, I love these herbs” etc. Create a ritual around taking them such as blessing the herbs for their help while doing your daily journalling.

Sometimes the ego (as in Freudian theory, ego) gets involved and it tells us how horrible the herbs taste because it doesn’t want to lose control. This can result in talking yourself out of getting help and healing. This goes for other therapies too and it’s just what I’ve noticed in clinic especially in relation to treating low moods and anxiety and something to ponder.
